A fascinating discovery has been made in Chicago’s partnership region of Kiryat Gat-Lachish –Shafir. In an untouched forest which abuts all three municipalities in the region, a pottery factory has been discovered dating back to at least the Ottoman period.

In coordination with the Israel Antiquities Authority and the Jewish National Fund, the Partnership is participating in digging up this monumental find! Graduatess and professionals - as pat of the Taglit-Birthright Israel: Shorashim Chicago Community Trip - along with teens from the local Kiryat Gat Rabin High School, were the first group to dig at the site. The group worked hard clearing the area of debris and tree branches and then under the guidance of the Antiquities Authority began to dig. The Authority was delighted with the hard and sincere work the group put in and is looking forward to more groups from Chicago to continue working at this new archeological site.
