Shalom Friends,

In this terrible hour, our hearts and our minds are with our friends in Israel as they struggle to protect themselves, their families, and their country.

As has been the case in difficult times in the past, our hearts are warmed by Shorashim alumni, parents, and friends who have asked how they can help. In response to what appears may be a more protracted conflict, we are offering several suggestions for action:

Chana Nameri (z''l) - Baruch Dayan Emet

It is with great regret that we share with you the news of the passing of Chana Nameri (z''l), the beloved mother of our cherished Yossi Nameri, a Shorashim founder and senior educator.

Yossi, an accomplished scholar, leading educator, and a veteran of multiple wars found great strength in his relationship with his mother and was continually humbled by her wisdom and love. Yossi cared for and lived with his mother until today.

We know that those of you who know Yossi join us as we wish him strength and comfort in the coming days.

A memorial fund has been established in Chana Nameri's name - The fund will be used for scholarships for Israeli participants to Shorashim's programs and for other special programs appropriate to her memory. You may use the link below to make a tax-deductible contribution.

Taglit-Birthright Israel: Shorashim and PELIE bring Jewish Educators to Israel

CHICAGO – For the first time, Jewish educators who teach complementary (part-time) Jewish education will have the opportunity to spend 10 all-expenses-paid days in Israel, thanks to Taglit-Birthright Israel: Shorashim - Teacher Trek, a program created with the help of the Partnership for Effective Learning and Innovative Education (PELIE). Teacher Trek is an effort to build a deep connection between Jewish educators and the State of Israel, by allowing teachers to experience Israel’s geography, natural beauty and history first hand.

Indiana University's KIP Israel Program to Meet Israeli Innovators

Twenty-five MBA students from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University will be experiencing  Israel this March with Shorashim.

Not only will they experience Israel and meet Israelis, the students will be mingling with Israel’s top innovators beginning with Shai Agassi, CEO of Better Place.

Taglit-Birthright Israel Chicago Community Trip "Digs" Their Partnership Region

 A fascinating discovery has been made in Chicago’s partnership region of Kiryat Gat-Lachish –Shafir.  In an untouched forest which abuts all three municipalities in the region, a pottery factory has been discovered dating back to at least the Ottoman period.  

 

Hundreds of Chicago-Area Hebrew Students Come Together to Celebrate Israeli Culture

Shorashim’s Club Israel will present its third annual excursion day for Hebrew Students this Monday and Tuesday November 2 and 3, 2009 at the Wlimette Theater and Congregation Beth Hillel B'nai Emunah. The excursion day is an opportunity for students and teachers alike to enjoy Israeli cinema, food, and music. The program, now in its third year has grown and includes:  Evanston Township, New Trier, Niles North, Niles West, Highland Park, Deerfield, Glenbrook South, and Chicagoland Jewish High Schools

Shorashim Receives Quality Award from Taglit-Birthright Israel

At its semi-annual trip organizer's meeting on September 2, 2009, Taglit-Birthright Israel recognized Shorashim's outstanding acheivement in the area of mifgash, encounter between North American Jews and Israeli peers. The award is part of a new program initiated by Taglit-Birthright Israel to identify trip organizers who show outstanding quality in their programs.
